Old Winchester Hill

This is a stunning ancient hillfort and superb chalk downland, on the west and south facing scarp slopes of the Meon Valley.

The scrub consists of Hawthorn, Juniper and Yew, which is thought to be indigenous to this site. Also, several types of orchids can be found, including Bee, Fly, Frog, Fragrant and Greater Butterfly Orchid. Other plants of note are Round-headed Rampion, Field Fleawort, Devils-bit Scabious and Autumn Lady's Tresses.

The site is excellent for butterflies, and you can see Adonis Blue, Chalkhill Blue, Dark Green Fritillary and Silver-spotted Skipper here.

For an inland site it's renowned for bird migration, most famously Ring Ouzel but other passerines too. Also it's good for large non-passerines such as rarer raptors.

Beacon Hill, Warnford

Beacon Hill is another chalk downland site with mature beech and hazel coppice, and can be found on the opposite side of the Meon valley from Old Winchester Hill. The reserve contains high quality chalk grassland, with small areas of scrub and woodland.

The rich downland flora includes Sheep's Fescue Grass, Rock Rose, Scabious, Yellow Rattle, and several species of orchid. You can also find Round-headed Rampion, Field Fleawort and Hairy-Rock Cress here.

Butterflies that can be seen here include Chalk-hill Blue, Brown Argus and Silver-spotted Skipper.

Chappett's Copse

This reserve is a beech wood in the Meon valley with a significant population of Sword-leaved Helleborines. Other orchids which occur here include Birds' Nest Orchid, Fly Orchid and White Helleborine.
