This is a stunning ancient hillfort and superb chalk downland,
on the west and south facing scarp slopes of the Meon Valley.
The scrub consists of Hawthorn, Juniper and Yew,
which is thought to be indigenous to this site. Also, several types
of orchids can be found, including Bee, Fly, Frog, Fragrant
and Greater Butterfly Orchid. Other plants of note
are Round-headed Rampion, Field Fleawort, Devils-bit
Scabious and Autumn Lady's Tresses.
The site is excellent for butterflies, and you can see Adonis
Blue, Chalkhill Blue, Dark Green Fritillary and
Silver-spotted Skipper here.
For an inland site it's renowned for bird migration, most famously
Ring Ouzel but other passerines too. Also it's good for large
non-passerines such as rarer raptors.
