Lower Test Marshes

Lower Test Marshes

A extensive but difficult to cover area of wet meadows, riverine pasture, reedbed and intertidal zones at the mouth of the Test, where it flows into Southampton Water near Totton.

Typical wetland species such as Kingfisher, Cetti's Warbler and Reed Warbler occur, and Marsh Harrier, Osprey, Hobby and even Raven are regular visitors. The wintering flock of Water Pipits has long been known from this site, but is often hard to observe a close range. Wintering wildfowl sometimes carry the odd rarity, such American Wigeon.

Scarce overshoot migrants such as Purple Heron and White Stork are recorded in most springs.
