Titchfield Haven

A National Nature Reserve run by HCC, on the east shore of the Solent near Lee-on-Solent. Extensive and important reedbeds, wet meadows, riverine and foreshore habitats.

The largest British population of Cetti's Warblers occurs here, along with Bearded Tits, and wintering Bitterns. Marsh Harrier and Avocet occur with some regularity. Wintering waders include large numbers of Black-tailed Godwits, and many ducks and geese use the reserve. Scarce passage waders are regular (Wood Sandpiper, Temminck's Stint etc.), and rarities feature strongly too (Pectoral Sandpiper, Lesser Yellowlegs, and historically Sociable Plover and Spotted Sandpiper).

Invertebrate interest is focused on dragonflies - numerous species occur, including Hairy Dragonfly and Ruddy Darter.

Offshore, large numbers of terns use the shingle beaches as roosting areas in passage periods, and regularly carry Black and Roseate Terns in among them. Sea passage throguh the Solent can be good - skuas are regular but very scarce, and wader movements can be quite large.
